How a suit should fit and sit
It's all about the fit. The fit is the most important thing when purchasing a new suit. You don't have to spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds to get the perfect fit.
A suit needs to fit perfectly and precisely to your body shape and size.
A well fitted tailored suit will make you stand out from the crowd and
get you recognised. Plus many compliments.
The perfect fit will make you feel and look more confident, smart, suave ,
and give you a defined look that automatically makes you feel special and
10 feet tall.
An ill fitting suit that's too baggy, big, sloppy, big in the shoulders, wide in
the legs, has extra fabric hanging around that makes you feel like you're swimming in it does nothing to your appearance, apart from that it only makes you look awful and badly in need of a new well fitted tailored suit.
A suit most importantly, must always fit in the shoulders. If it does not fit
in the shoulders, put it back it's not for you! The jacket shoulders should
be In line with your shoulders and not hanging over your shoulders.
If a suit is too big in the shoulders, the shoulders start to collapse.
You don't want look like an American footballer.
The jacket should fit very close to your body and chest to give you a sharp defined polished & slim line look. It should have no more than 1/12 inch pull at the front. It should be fitted but not too tight. You should be able to fasten up the top button of your jacket without too much pull and an X appearing on the front of your jacket . Never do both buttons up on a jacket. Button the top and leave the bottom button open.
Always get the correct length, you don't want a Jacket that's too long that makes your legs look very short and stumpy. It is a jacket, not a coat.
With your fingers you should be able to cup the bottom of your jacket
in your finger fold.
The trouser waistband should be wearable and comfortable and you should
be able to insert three fingers in between the waistband of the trouser and waist to dictate that you are in the right trousers size. Always when trying on trousers sit down in them and see how they feel on your waist and seat
to make sure you can still breathe. Always wear a belt to finish off the look.
The leg length should be long enough with just one break of fabric hitting the bridge of the shoe and should be tailored down to the top of the heel of your shoe. Too short a leg length looks as if you're expecting a flood. Too long and you can probably make another pair out of them. Too long is just wrong, they will scuff at the back and rip. To cuff or not to cuff, it's up to you.
The sleeve of the jacket should come to your wrist bone at all times, half an inch to 3/4 of an inch shirt cuff must be showing, not covering half your hand and your knuckles . This breaks up the jacket sleeve and the shirt sleeve and gives it a very sartorial look. It's all about the fit.
